Focusing on Human Development, the 3rd International Modernization Forum Is Held Smoothly

The 3rd International Modernization Forum and the 17th Forum on Modernization Study in China was held in the China Hall of Science and Technology in Beijing from May 24 to 26, 2019. About 80 experts and scholars from more than 10 countries such as the US, the UK, Japan, Italy and Russia were gathered together to discuss the relationship between modernization and human development from five aspects of education, science and technology, health, ecology and life quality. The forum adopted the Charter of International Modernization Forum and decided to set up its headquarters in Beijing.

 

Professor Wang Keqiang, Under-Secretary-General of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, made an opening speech. Alberto Martinelli, former Chairman of the International Social Science Council, UNESCO and a professor of the University of Milan, Jose A. Ocampo, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and a professor of the Columbia University, Professor Liu Depei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor Wang Jinnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and Professor He Chuanqi, an academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Director of China Center for Modernization Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a special speech respectively.

 

The forum brought brilliant speeches and heated discussions to us. Professor Alberto Martinelli introduced the evolution of European welfare countries comprehensively. Professor Jose A. Ocampo introduced social policies and social development of Latin American countries. Academician Liu Depei introduced Healthy China and Health for All. Academician Wang Jinnan described the goal of building a beautiful China by 2035. Professor He Chuanqi described the "Periodic Table of Human Civilization Course". Professor Ye Linna, a corresponding fellow of the Russian Academy of Sciences, analyzed the advanced productivity. Professor Saito of the Nihon University analyzed the aged society and welfare policies. Professor Pasni of the University of Milan introduced the life quality in Europe. A lot of correct and penetrating views were put forward at the forum which can serve as reference for China's modernization.

 

The International Modernization Forum is a small international academic conference series dominated by Chinese scholars. The forum was co-held by the China Center for Modernization Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Center for World Modernization Process, Peking University, Center for Comparative Studies of Modernization, Fudan University, Theory and Modernization Magazine in Tianjin, and Association for Modernization Study, China Society for Future Studies.

 

More than 80 papers were received, among which more than 40, representing the frontier level of modernization study in the world today, were finally accepted after the peer review of the academic committee, including 15 from foreign scholars in the US, the UK, Japan, Italy, Sweden, Russia and Romania and more than 20 from Chinese scholars.

 

The forum was directed by the Bureau of Development Planning and Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and supported by academies of sciences, well-known universities and research institutions of 11 countries, including Russian Academy of Sciences, Romanian Academy of Sciences, Columbia University, University of Virginia, University of Milan, Nihon University, University of Hull, St. Petersburg State University and University of Gothenburg at abroad, and Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Peking University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University and Wuhan University at home. Meanwhile, a number of reporters from well-known news agencies attended the forum. The English and Chinese version of the forum proceedings will be published by the China Science Press.

The International Modernization Forum is a small international academic conference series launched and held by the China Center for Modernization Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was set up with the approval of the Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013, and obtained the direction and support of the Bureau of Development Planning and Bureau of Science Communication, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Every session of International Modernization Forum is co-held by many organizations.

 

According to the Charter of International Modernization Forum, the International Modernization Forum is an open, nonprofit international academic platform in the area of world modernization study, with the aim to promote global modernization study and world modernization process. It consists of forum members, forum council, forum academic committee, forum secretariat and forum headquarters. The council includes 11 members (from the five continents). The academic committee includes 32 members (from 12 countries). The secretariat is set up in the China Center for Modernization Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. And the main venue of the forum is located in the China Hall of Science and Technology in Beijing.

 

The International Modernization Forum is held every three years. The 1st forum was held in Beijing in 2013, with the theme of "Modernization and Global Change", and released the Modernization Announcement. The 2nd forum was held in Beijing in 2016, with the theme of "Modernization and Diversity". It established the Association for Modernization Study, China Society for Future Studies. The 3rd forum was held in 2019, with the theme of "Modernization and Human Development". It adopted the Charter of International Modernization Forum, making the forum management standardized and institutionalized. The 4th forum is expected to be held in Beijing in 2022, with the theme of "Innovation and Modernization".
