1.1 Welcome
Welcome to the Third International Modernization Forum (IMF 2019)!
The IMF 2019 is co-organized by the China Center for Modernization Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Center for World Modernization Process of Peking University, the Center for Comparative Studies of Modernization of Fudan University, Theory and Modernization Magazine (Tianjin of China), and the Association for Modernization Study of China Society for Future Studies. It will be held from May 24 to 26, 2019 at China Hall of Science and Technology in Beijing, the capital of China.
Modernization has a number of meanings that coexist today. Firstly, it has been a worldwide phenomenon which refers to the world frontiers of human development since the 18th century, and the behavior and process of different countries to catch up, reach and maintain the world-frontier level. Secondly, it is a progress of civilization that represents a paradigm transformation from traditional to modern civilization, taking place in various fields of politics, economy, society, culture, ecological environment and human behavior etc. Thirdly, it is a development goal in different countries, and modernized countries need to stay modernized while unmodernized countries need to work hard to achieve modernization.
The phenomenon of modernization began roughly in the 18th century and prevailed in the 20th and 21st centuries. From the 18th to the 21st century, it has seen fundamental changes in connotations and characteristics. At present, most countries in the world are undergoing some kind of modernization consciously or unconsciously, and make modernization one of their development goals directly or indirectly (Martinelli, Chuanqi He, 2015). The Modernization Science enhances our understanding about the modernization phenomenon through interdisciplinary studies.
With the support of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the IMF has been held two times (the IMF 2013 "Modernization and Global Change" and the IMF 2016 "Modernization and Diversity") in Beijing. More than 90 experts from 14 countries had attended including Prof. Alberto Martinelli and Prof. Piotr Sztompka, two former presidents of the International Sociological Association, and over 100 academic paper had been received and the Modernization Announcement had been adopted. Afterwards, Global Modernization Review (English version) and World Modernization Report (Chinese Version) were published, strongly promoting the international exchange and cooperation in modernization research, the modernization progress and the development of the modernization science.
The theme of the IMF 2019 is "Modernization and Human Development," under which there are five topics: Human Modernization, Education Modernization and Human Development, Health Modernization and Human Development, Ecological Modernization and Human Development, and the Modernization and Quality of Life. The last topic is also the theme of the 17th China Modernization Forum.
